He told Vanocur the “old optimism” of the civil rights movement was “a little superficial” and now needed to be tempered with “a solid realism.” And just 11 months before his death, he spoke bluntly about what he called the “difficult days ahead.” To mark the 50 th anniversary of King’s speech, we present highlights from that exclusive, rarely seen interview, newly restored from the original color film.
